History Of The Abraham Project

The Abraham Project is an all encompassing ministry reaching out to Costa Ricans by attending their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

In 1998, Pastor Jorge Gomez had a vision to help his community by providing a daycare facility for at-risk children and a place for youth activities and worship. .A short time later, Steve & Georgiana Thomas shared their vision with Pastor Gomez of building children’s homes for the abandoned children of the area. .From this union, the Abraham Project was born. .The project is located in Villas de Ayarco, which is only twenty-five minutes from San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica.

When completed, the Abraham Project will consist of three children's homes, a daycare center, cafeteria, and a multi-purpose building. .Each home will be inhabited by a host family and eight children who have been assigned by the Costa Rican social service agency. .The first home was completed and dedicated on June 15, 2003. .The Thomas family moved into the first home as pioneer houseparents and continue to administrate and oversee the construction and operation of the rest of the homes. .The daycare will service over one hundred children. .Throughout the week, the multi-purpose building will be used for sports activities as well as other community and youth events. .On Sundays it will be a center for worship.

The land consists of approximately 2.5 acres and was purchased with money raised within Costa Rica. . In October 2001, a local Costa Rican company donated a large amount of wood to the project which the Abraham Project recycled into building material.

The wood comes from crates that were used to import large sheets of glass. .These crates are disassembled before the scrap lumber is transported to the project site. .At the project, all staples and nails are removed. .The boards are then treated, planed, sanded and prepared so that they can be used for lumber. .With this lumber we construct buildings, trim walls, and make doors, stairs, cabinets, closets, and furniture.

In February 2002, a crew of local men were hired to begin constructing. .Since then we have been joined by many people from all over the world who have donated their time, skills, and resources to help build the project. 

Each day we see God at work. .He continually sends the Abraham Project volunteers and provides us with the resources we rely on to build.  The Abraham Project is truly a work of faith.
